OSD UsiA NSA
The Alpine Club of Alpignano, Itely (a suburb of Turin) has informed
the Consulate that on July 3, 1968
an expedition consisting of members of the Alpignano branch of the Alpine Club of (CAI) climbed
twin Greenland peaks, 4,164 feet high and christened them John and Robert Kennedy.
The peaks are in the District of Angmagssalik, approximately 50 miles
north of the tow of Angnagssalik and about three hours by sea from Eskimo village of Kungmiut. The exact location is between the fiords
Ikasagt and Iasaulac. The summits were reached after JO hours hiking and climbing,
and although the peaks
are not particularly high,
are considerably higher than other mountains in the area, That
are not especially easy to climb can be scen from the single
tograph of John Kennedy Feak supplied
to the Consulate, which is
3
enclosed with this airgram.
The summits of the peaks were reached by three alpinists led by the
1
President of the Alfignano branch of the CAI, Fiore AMISANO , and 2
including also Gianmaria GUASTI and Flavio BERTOIO .

INT LAB TAR SUBJECT Sirhan Trial Receives Close Attention in Amman

ARMY Cia NAvY
20 5 The trial of the accused assassin of Senator Robert Kennedy, Sirhan Bisharz
o30 Usia NSA Sirhan, continues to receive wide press coverage in Jordan_ The reporting
34 [0 3 generally is straightforward and detailed. Editorials have been sparse.
N sC The following editorial fro the sensationalist Amman weekly
Akhbar al-'Usbou' on August ninth, ent itled "Sirhan and the Palestine
Problen provides an example of 5ome of the more extreme opinions:
"As a result of the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy, Sirhan
is standing trial in an American court. His only defense is that
he killed Kennedy for the sake of his country.
"Three important points are raised by this case:
mI 1. Sirhan is not a criminal, but rather a man of
principle.
2
"2_ The bullet that shot Kennedy was an inevitable
necessity becauge Zionism has succeeded in attracting bigoted
Christians in America into an unholy alliance by convincIng -
them that the Palestine problem is a dispute between Moslems
and Jews _ and that it is a Christian duty to support the Jews. 3
Sirhan killed Kennedy because he is an Arab first and a
Christian second He killed Kennedy for the sake of his home -
land which was usurped by the Jews with the help of the Americans.
Living in this atmosphere of direct challenge, Sirhan discovered
the necessity for this bullet.

n Kennedy' s assassination has raised many questions in
America, such a8: What has this Christian to do with it?
Are the Arab Christians with the Moslems? For wose sake
did Sirhan shoot Kennedy? It i9 sufficient that Sirhan' s
bullet has raised such questions among Americans
"3. Arabs everywhere have denied responsibility for
this assassination and have avoided comment on the virtues
0f political assassination. This attitude of the Arabs
toward Sirhan is similar to the attitude of Pilatus toward
Christ.
"ill Sirhan'9 trial be able to melt the indifference
and passivity 0f the Arabs toward this Arab patriot in a
foreign land?n

One feature wbich the Pre8s in my country Bharee

indiscretiong of peoplo in responsible positions. The news 0f
the asbe8bination of Senator Kennedy offered the Press in

IS DEMOCRACY COMPL ETELY BANKRUPTZ
The brutal assass ination Kennedy shows we | | the fai lure
of 3 certain type of democracy where the entire pol itica |

1. Attached are five copies of a letter dated June 9 and sent to
OSD Usi A NSA PRD confidant Sacha VOLMAN from party mentor Juan BOSCH. In the
letter, Bosch points out how he had predicted that Robert Xennedy
muld be killed and how the US people are allegedly dominated by
the power structure The US people are "Pentagonized tf and there
is no chance that the US will change its reckless policies either
toward Latin America oj the rest of the mrld; if the US withdraws
from Viet-Nam
9
it will be for internal political reasons , and only
to fight another somewhere else _ The uS will continue applying
its established methods in the DR, and Volman and PENA Gomez are
mistaken if they hope for any change in this _ the Dominican
people can help themselves, and then only by severing ties with
the US and looking elsewhere_ It is useless to try to remove the
PRD' s "communist# stigma_
9
for the party's enemies are convinced of
this and President Johnson himself called PRDers communists Finailync
Bosch expresses himself firmly against_ the US trip of
the PRD delegation to the Robert Xennedy funeral observances (see 2
reference) by pointing out the risks involved and by charging that
the US seeks servants , not allies . 1
2 Volan asked that the letter be shown to the Ambassador, in
the belief that it clearly demonstrates the difficulties he (Volman)
and Secretary General PENA Comez are having with Bosch , who
charges them with a naive and soft attitude toward the U.S
Volman also believes that the letter by inference refutes the
idea that Pena Comez is by nature or comitment anti-US .

4 _ Comment
A Bosch' s letter speaks for itself and is perhaps of most value
in demonstrating the lengths to which Bosch S bitterness and frustra -
tion have driven him_ His anti-Americanism clearly extends not only
to the Johnson Administration but to the US people pec se with the
rationalization that they have been hopelessly "Pentagonized 11 and that
nothing good may be expected of them _ In a clear call to abandon
hope for the democratic achievement Of power in favor of the route of
violent revolution , he advises all Dominicans seeking to transform
their country to break their ties with the US and to take their
struggle elsewhere
9
for "anything else is a waste of time and energy - n1
Ba The letter does appear to show
9
as Volman suggests
9
that Pena
Gomez is at odds with Bosch concerning PRD/US relations ; and this
basic disagreement with the former PRD President extends to other
party leaders as well, according to Volman ' s description of their
reactions to the letter.
