Translation Of President Diori Hamani S declaration on Radio_Niger June 6,_1968
I must express my indignation at this cowardly method of suppression
of a Political adversary . Here in Niger, as we have reaffirmed within OAU
and OCAM, we always condemn assassination as a means 0f attaining tical
ends _ It is a great pity that after his brother John Kennedy it should now
be Robert who is attacked by people failing to realize the importance of
their acts For these poor fellows imagine that by killing a man one kills
an idea. The idea started by the Kennedys towards national reconciliation
in the United States and toward equality and justice O this idea will progress
against wind and tides
I salute the bereaved family and it is for this reason that in the name
of the Government a telegram has been sent to the Kennedy Family and to the
President of the United States of America:

Declaration Of President Boubou Hama on Niger_ Radio June 6 1968

UNCLASSIF IED Enclosure 4
Translation of President Boubou Hama S Declaration on Niger_Radio_ June 6,1968
This act in itself is odious. I condemn it from the human point of view.
It is not by political murder that you get rid of an opponent. Just the
contrary: you build him uPp in the present as well as in the future and make
a martyr out of hima Senator Kennedy is indeed a martyr, and even more So
because five years ago his brother. then President of the United States,
was killed: More tragic because the Kennedys were determined to find a
solution to the American drama. Therefore the death of the Kennedys is a
sort of loss of hope, to millions of Poor people in America. Well then, and
this is my opinion, it seems that the American People are accustomed to have
their leaders assassinated: This method, however, should not become a habit,
At this point in a great, a very great country as America every person of
worth has to fear for his life: In such conditions where is democracy? Here' s
the problem, it is of course an American affair and not much to do with us,
but most of all its an affair that concerns human beings_ and that is why we
are talking about it. I say that Western civilization is disappointing mil-
lions Of people, for now at its highest degree Of development, at its most
active and powerful, this civilization which claims to be an example to
humanity kills worthy men because of their ideals, and especially humani-
tarian ideals, then we begin to have doubts about Western divilization.
This is a fact we must recognize and, like it or not, this aspect of
Western civilization is a morbid example inciting people to murder and
violence, who have a regard for America and the Americans, feel
that the death of John Kennedy, the death of Robert Kennedy, of Pastor
Martin Luther and the death of many other unknown Persons should lead
the American people to take a hold on themnselves, to stand up with the
necessary force and faith against the killers, against this law of the
jungle which seems to be taking hold in one Of the most advanced countries
of the worlda
Apart from this I present my most sincere sympathy to the American Govern-
ment and also to the victim' 9 family. I express the hope that the American
People may overcome this wave of violence assailing their land. I pray the
Almighty to inspire their leaders to eliminate tical assassination in
America as a means Of reaching its goals.
