In general Indonesians reacted to the death of Senator Robert Kennedy
Osd USI A NSA with unusual concern_ In a country where letter writing is not nearly
as common as in Western countrie8, over 350 messages of condolence were
received by the Mission . To 300 of these the Ambassador sent personal
replies . The remainder were addressed to USIS and were answered by USIS
staff members, principally by the USIS Director_ A large number of the
letters bore multiple signatures or were from representatives of organi -
zations such a5 government departments , schoole political parties and
youth groups _ In addition, 275 people mostly Indonesians signed two
books of condolences, which had been paced Ln the Embassy lobby for
one
3
This show of concern reflects the special appeal of the late Senator to
people of the underdeveloped world In general to Indonesia in parti-
cular Senator Kennedy was know to have show a continuing interest in
Indonesia, and this was deeply appreciated by the Indonesian people_ He
visited here twice and he established the Kennedy Scholarship Fund which
has draw a great deal of favorable attention despite its modest size _
As a result, Indonesians fm m al1 walks of lfe feel that have lost
a friend
Enclosed are the letters of condolence and the two books of condolence8
appropriate dispogal _ The letters are divided into three packets;
roughly two-thirds are general expressions of sympathy , a sixth request
that their expression of sympathy be conveyed to the Kennedy family , and
another sixth request that thelr letters be forwarded to the Kennedy
family _
