held a small reguiem mass at the St. Johns Catholic Church of

Ambassador Morgan and other Americans as well as a mixture of
French and Ivorian personalities_ During the service, Monseignor
Yago announced that the Presidency had informed him there would
be an official State Requiem Mass for the Senator the following eve-

Beginning immediately after the news of the shooting became
known in Portugal _ the Embassy began to receive telephone
calls and expressions of condolence _ These numbered almost
200 in the period up to the Senator S death ana a large num -
ber afterward Interestingly enough _ despite widespread
editorial criticism in the controlled press of the "climate
of violence" ana excessive freedom in the United States
which allegedly contributed to the Senator S shooting, the
messages 0f condolence often included expressions of soli-
darity with the American people and with the American nation
Foreign Minister Franco NOGUEIRA sent to the Secretary of
State a message of condolences for the Kennedy family
(Lisbon 1542) and the Portuguese Ambassador in Washington
was designated to represent the Government of Portugal at
the Senator s funeral services _
The Defense Attache received a personal note from the Secre-
tary of the Portuguese Air Force and a telegram of condolence_
from the Chief of Staff for transmission to the Chief of
Staff USAF (USDAO Lisbon 0580) and telephoned 'messages of
