InT LAB TAR SUBJECT Reaction to Kennedy Death Shows Critical Side

1 Local news media provided the Dominican public with very wide
090 usi NSA coverage of Senator Kennedy's assassination through wire service
20 10 3 stories from all over the world plus locally generated reporting
NSC and commentary. Along with factual reporting this included a good
measure of interpretative comments alleging social decomposition in
the United States and speculation concerning possible intrigue be-
hind the assassination. Prominent among the negative wire stories
carried locally were those from AFP and EFE (Spanish) dispatches
2 Not surprisingly such commentary found an ample nuber of Dominican
echoers and supporters particularly within but not confined to
the political left
9
with many going beyond any real concern over
what the assassination might ultimately imply for the United States ,
Latin America and the world _ Reaction from comunist quarters dis -
8 played the expected bias in favor of a North American apocalypse with
Senator Kennedy' s tragedy as evidence to that end A Fourteenth
of June (1J4) statement saw Wall Street' s "criminal hand" at mrk _
4 Then "The 1J4" magazine titled an article "Kennedy ' s Assassination
7
Reveals the Break Up of Imperialism and Deepens its Crisis I Since
the Senator the argument went "was not exactly representing" the 4
"fascist way Mi he was eliminated_ The Dominican Students Federation
(FED) called the death the "denouement" 0f as quoted in El Nacional,
"the contradictions in the bosom of imperialism (this last phrase
appeared word for word in "The 1j4") - The Dominican Popular Move -
ment (MPD) saw the cause as "contradictions I1 too , but between U,S,

Qisappearance of 'the last hope of mankind for peace" has been
reported separately in some detail (SD2239, 2767 and 2778) as
has PRSC Secretary General Javier's statement along
imilariy
nega ~
tive lines (SD 2739) .
4 While the capital morning press comment has taken a general
line expressing horror and lamenting the tragedy , even El Caribe
spoke on June 5 1968 of a need for the U.S to examine Its con-
science . The next it carried a column by Jose F Penson which
reacted in extravagant terms to an assassination which "proves n1 a
type of "collective schizophrenia " in the country whose "only sal-
vation was represented by Robert Kennedy _ Santiago 's La Informacion
in its June 6 edition ran two strongly critical editoriaTs and asked,
"What is happening in a country which annihilates its great presi-
dents and liberal leaders its Nobel Prize winners ?n Seeing doubts
raised on the legitimacy of an electoral process in which the prin-
cipal candidate is murdered the paper continued "We believe that
this event completely lays aside the version that these political
offenses are the wrk of blind forces
9
because those who fall are
only the liberals
9
the just and those who oppose iniquity and ex-
ploitation and demand changes and reform in the politics and business
of the North American nation 11
5 . Leftist-nationalist El Nacional's initial editorial in its June
6 extra edition maintained a
relatively moderate position. It
dissented from any interpretations that the Xennedy deaths and that
of Martin Luther were products of a society whose principles
are in bankruptcy but rather thought the shooting showed the work
of those few who impose their selfish ends of pawer - A colunn
that afternoon bearing the byline of Dominican Comunist Party (PCD)
spokesman Narciso ISA Conde compared troubles in the U.S_ and France
and asserted that the "Manifest Destiny" of the U.S is for "uch
violence from the government and the fascist-like groups Tf ISA
Conde implicitly blamed forces around President Johnson , the "prin-
cipal beneficiary of the November 22 , 1963 assassination in Dallas "
and "priest of violence Mf with both tragic events Next day El
Nacional journalist Silvio HERA SME Pefia likened his sadness on news
OF senator Kennedy's death (at "the murderous hand of backwardness and
Oppression") to that he felt when North American troops landed in
Santo Domingo April 28 , 1965 Alejandro PANIAGUA wrote in; El
Nacional June 9 under "Political Assassinations " that since
Kennedy S rise indicated that "the scientific control" over public
opinion had been "lost by the highest political circles artificers , "
crime was resorted to since the defeat of Kennedy at the polls
could not be guaranteed . A column by Tomas MARTE one day later ex-
pressed fear that perhaps the "one star of hope" was "extinguished . IT
Although sprinkled With bitter phrases Marte 's piece concluded on
a note of qualified hope that the victim S principles and ideas
could one day bear fruit
6 El Nacional '8 parent weekly Ahora carried a particularly vicious
editorial in its June 10 edition which claimed the assassin, "per -
haps paid; Tf was unaware of what he was doing, like Oswald _ nThose

indicated Ihe would take the first step toward the socialization
of the North American economy Tf Tapia then asked if Juan Bosch ' s
"Pentagonism 11 thesis alleging a "sick society" in the U.S
were not being fulfilled _
7 _ The moderate constitutionalist weekly "Renovacion 1f ran an
