David Kassab was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and immigrated to the United States in 1949. He was involved in various real estate scams, including one with Dr. Stanley Dubrin, who listed himself as Vice-president of the American Nilo Corporation. Kassab's arrest record dates back to August 28, 1959, for grand theft in a travel agency sham with George Dimitrovich.

Dr. Stanley Dublin was arrested on February 28, 1963, for grand theft and again on October 14, 1966, for the crime of abortion. He rented office space from Joe M. Arnoff, who eventually went bankrupt at the "Big A" stores and severed his business relationship with Dr. Dublin.

Jim Braden was associated with Victor Pereira, both of whom were sent to federal prison for grand theft. Braden made frequent trips to Texas, Louisiana, and Florida during his parole and was in a building across the street from the Dallas School Depository on November 22, 1963, shortly after President John Kennedy was shot.

Braden's association with Roger L. Bauman dates back to their association with Arthur Clark Sr., who was a member of the Old Detroit Purple Gang. Braden worked for the Morgan Brown Oil Corporation and frequently traveled with Mr. Morgan Brown as his consultant on trips to Louisiana and Texas.

On June 7, 1968, Miss DeSanders filed for a divorce from Jim Braden, citing his convincing her to invest $500,000 in his company, the Empire Oil Corporation. The corporate papers indicated that the shareholders in the company were Jean Braden, Mona Chapman, Martha Herndon, and Jean Cox.

Wallace White received 45% of the corporation's stock for putting up the initial cash investment in the Shepard case, while Arthur Toll received five percent off the stock as his fee for legal services rendered. A business card with the inscription "Michael Wayne, Promoter" was found in Keith Gilbert's residence, and a card bearing the name of Keith Gilbert was found on Michael Wayne during interrogation after Senator Kennedy's shooting. The investigation into Gilbert's background indicated that he was an extremist member of the Minutemen Society and had acquired numerous business cards while in the firearms business with Robert R. Romero.
