The FBI's investigation into the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy began on June 4, 1968, at approximately 1:45 A.M. when shots were fired at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. The first report was made to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) by a hotel employee.

Assistant Director C.D. DeLoach advised that Ted Sorenson and Pierre Salinger had requested him to contact them, and he would take care of this matter without giving the impression that they were investigating it.

At 3:40 A.M., Assistant Director Tom Bishop contacted the writer and advised that in the event of any press inquiry, they should give the statement that the FBI was rendering every possible assistance to the local authorities.

The fingerprints of the unidentified killer were flown back immediately via military aircraft, accompanied by an Agent. The prints were turned over to SA Joseph Arwine by the LAPD due to the fact that the perpetrator had no identification and no record in the LAPD or Los Angeles County Sheriff's office.

A private line telephone was installed between the FBI office and the Good Samaritan Hospital, where Supervisor John Barron and SA Frank Callahan handled liaison with the Kennedy party. Supervisor Robert Kertin replaced SA Joseph Arwine and handled liaison with Chief of Police Reddin.

SA Henry Schutz advised that the Bureau had been informed of the identities of five persons known to be wounded and their condition as of 3:00 A.M. The President's staff assistant, Ted Sorenson, expressed his sympathy and deep regret at 3:20 A.M., stating he was invoicing security precautions for all candidates of all political parties.

Senator Kennedy was in the operating room with a bullet in the masthead area at the rear, causing pressure on the brain. If it were a blood clot, it would be capable; if caused by a Bullet, it would be most serious.
