721 Thira "daitz:
Oct. 1968.
The Honorable George W_ Milias
Memper of the Assenbly , 22nd .
'bistrict,
State
Sacranento,
eaBotoGalif. 95814.
This letter is to bring something to your attention that has been
on my" mind for a long time Because of your record locally and your rep-
utation for pursuing something util results are obtained,
1 hope you wiii
channel this correctly to maxinum results.
Red tape I cannot cut-the channels open to you I do not but I
have been writing letters The first was to Eric Sevareid who in Look
Magazine last July had three articles about "America
15 Pointed
in the Right
Direction" or some similar title in the face of the senseless assassina-
tion of
Robert Kennedy"
Another was to Walter Cronkite, who permitted
Chicago "Boss= "1 Daley to alr his views over the network after the disaster
that was the Democratic National Convention_ Then to Attorney-General
Ransey Clark, when even President Johnson cried out"for God S us
bave iiberty, but under the law" To Gov Reagan, asking that mJ^

properly forwarded addressed to Richard Nixon when he in Santa Clara;
to Vice-Pres Humphrey and Edmund Muskie to Waverly = Minn_ as the campaign
started. I have received one answer to al1
these-from Vice-Prese Humphrey_
The imediate subject is the punishment of the assasins of Martin
Luther King and Robert Kennedy. Why the innumerable delays the careful
protection of men caught with' smoking guns that commit the
'erimes?
Were
circumstantial evidence involved, where the suspect night be wrongfully
convicted--but these, along with the killers of Medgar Evers, tee three
civil rights workers buried under a construction site , the housewife Mrs ,
Liuso---all the murderers tried and released with no
comparable death
penalty. Wha t right has the man to live or even ask for a trial who mur-
dered the 8 student nurses in cold blood?
Under the repeated circumstance of release of these criminals due to
al1 the loopholes and technicalities to be found in the law, justice is SO
seldome done these days in the level crimes tbat Teal justice is becom-
ing the travesty of our time.
Delays_ protection of the criminal loopholes--these are bad enough,
but how
much greater-compounded is the
"di3grac8
of solution when the
criminal is remanded to
psychietrists-declared incompetent ufit, insane-

in our
society , do the courts permit the lives of these deviates to
be_So carefully treated ? How leng would it have taken justice" to be done
thru regular channels if the peculiar, cancer-ridden little man who did
not care about
hinsei}
had not shot Lee Harvey' Oswala? And what would the
yerdict have been?
None of the loopholes can be plugged at federal level--it is the
responsibility of the states. But" always with S0 much time to
take the edge off of our anger and hatred--to insist on a fair
ilapsiai
when
in my estimation no' trial is deserved-~meanwhile the murdered ones are
gone , and the maimed are left to struggle thru
ilfe
Are Martin Luther
and Robert Kennedy important enough to our
society for justice to be
done, at least in these cases, or are they to be let g0 scot free or with
some insignificant sentence? What becane of the way some
countries
still
handle it--punishment fits the crime, and it 1s carried out in kind? We
just might have a far less permissive society if the culprits Inew that
their lives would be forfeited exactly as thexkilled or_mained_ their
victims. The idea woula be realistically effective , it 1s not sadistic_
The for the average citizen, Mr _ Milias_ is frustration-which
seems: to be the; only recourse after the ' dismay,

of administration, etc, ad infini

not to have our feeltngs compounded by the

of laws or the
inactivity 0f officialdom which seems to harbor , even nurture the contan-
inating criminals rather than eliminating them How is our
best interest
servea when we
cater
to the criminals rather than elininating them? How
many more postponenents will Sirhan get--along full news coverage WIth
pictures which maintains that the trial was postponed in order not to
lock the jurors up over the_holidays--since June 6
Does not the frustrated ci Mr. Milias, have a right to ask:
